Park Details

A fundraising drive that ended in May 2005 successfully concluded with the purchase of 126 acres near downtown Wimberley, home to the jewel we call Blue Hole.

In the six years since, plans were drawn up and approved for the final phase, building the facilities to turn a rustic swimming hole into a new regional park to provide recreation for Texas families and preserve our Texas treasure for generations to come. The City hired Design Workshop to design the park that was originally envisioned in a master plan led by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in 2006.

Construction began in the Fall of 2010 and Phase One is now completed. Swimmers began enjoying new facilities on June 11, 2011. Phase Two opened the following year.

HOW IT ALL STARTED: Some history about Blue Hole

More than a 100 volunteers are striving in a variety of ways to accomplish the mission of the Friends of Blue Hole.Photo by Lynn Holubec

Leading these volunteers are members of the Village of Wimberley Parks and Recreation Board: Malcolm Harris, Horace Wilson, Mark Bursiel, Tim Thompson, Jan Fulkerson, Thad Nance, Dell Hood, Christine Byrne, and Linda Hudson.

And, the Blue Hole Stakeholder Group of more than two dozen volunteers worked for more than a year on the Blue Hole park master plan.

Blue Hole is open summers with volunteers helping in many areas, including gate entry, swim area supervision, parking management, and trash pickup.

Also, assistance is on-going or planned from area master gardeners as well as Keep Wimberley Beautiful volunteers.
